Eggplants prefer rich, fertile soil with plenty of organic matter. Add well-rotted compost or manure before planting.  Eggplants may also be planted in containers. Use a dark color container at least 18-24 inches wide and deep and use a commercial potting mix rather than garden soil. As soon as seedlings emerge, provide plenty of light and stake or cage for support and avoid disturbing the roots later.
Indoor: 6 - 8 weeks before planting time (soil 70°F day 60°F Night) individual 2 to 4-inch diameter containers. Thoroughly moisten, seed - starting mix then fill containers to within 1/2 inch of the top. Put 2 to 3 seeds in each small pot and cover.  Light: Seedlings 3-4 inches beneath fluorescent plant lights turned on 16 hrs per day, off for 8 hrs at night. 
Harvest: When the skin is shiny and unwrinkled, and can rebound to gentle pressure squeeze. Do not wait long, overripe eggplant may be slightly brown. Do not pull fruit, cut stem leaving 1” attached
Mulch: At least 2”, and preferably 3-4” deep.
Fertilizer: Feed when they are 3-4 weeks old using a starter solution (half strength) Use manure or add 3 lbs of 5-10-5 fertilizer per 100 sq. ft. when fruits begin to appear add 2 lbs.
